MY FATHER-IN-LAW, SRI BFRIJ NANDAN LAL
Shelandra Kulshrestha, 9, Old Survey Road, Dehradun

It was only after my marriage to his third daughter, Madhur, in February 1971 that I came in contact with my father-in-law Sri B N Lal. Therefore, my association was not very long. However, this short association left an everlasting and profound impact on my personality.
My first meeting with him, actually goes back to September 1970 when he came to my residence in Etah along with Devendra Bhai Sahab (Dr D K Kulshrestha, now settled in Adelaide, Australia) to ‘see me’ for his daughter. The very first impression he left on me was that of a simple and honest man. I remember the date because it was my birthday and my mother would celebrate it with pooja and ladies sangeet (though I had crossed my teens almost a decade back). He was dressed in very simple attire of Khadi Kurta and Pajama.
Babuji, as we all called him, had retired from service way back in 1960 but the amount of work he would put in daily was unimaginable for a man of 70 years. I always found him busy in one thing or the other. He was closely associated with many social organisations such as KP Inter College Management Society, Vishnupuri Housing Cooperative Society, Sarvodaya and many more. He was a true Gandhian and much admired Vinoba Bhave and his Bhoodaan movement. Aligarh, being infamous for communal conflicts, would always find him in such times involved in activating piece committees and working fearlessly in tension-filled areas.
Despite his busy schedule he would find time to write books on thoughts and works of Gandhi and Vinoba, moral-teachings books for children and so many other topics. He would write in simple and crisp language. His commitment to Gandhian principles was total.
Whenever I would sit with him he would tell me about the tremendous influence Gandhi had on him. He once told me that Gandhi knew that violence had no limits and rat race for violence has given us atom bomb which can annihilate the world in no time. Therefore, non-violence is the most potent weapon of the future and he proved it by winning independence for India.
Babuji’s life was very much organised. He would get up early in the morning and start his day with morning walk followed by exercise and yoga. Then, after a light breakfast he would begin his day’s work. He was a frugal eater.
I can’t claim that I knew Babuji too deeply. Nevertheless, I found him a man of integrirty, sincerity, courage and compassion. He could feel other’s pain.
I wish his soul rests in eternal peace.
